How do I open and print PDF documents ?

To open the PDF document, open the file manager XFE, it is located in the menu under Desktop Environment -> XFE. Double click the PDF file and Adobe Acrobat should start. To print your file, choose print in the File menu of Acrobat Reader.

Which alternatives to Microsoft Word are there ?

In the G-Bar there are two alternatives to Microsoft Word: StarOffice and OpenOffice. These office suites contains word processors that can read and write Word 97 and Word 2000 (which has the same file format as Word 97) files.

However, we encourage users to use standard formats as HTML, OpenXML or RTF, rather than the Word format. You loose some formatting when saving your files in the aforementioned formats, but the extra formatting can be added later.

LaTeX is another alternative worth checking out for writing technical reports. There is a LaTeX support on DTU. You might also want to check out the not so short introduction to LaTeX.
