DTU Wireless

DTU provides access to two wireless networks:

• eduroam (SSID: eduroam)
• DTU Wireless (SSID: dtu)

Please note: The old network with the SSID 'DTU Wireless' is obsolete since Oct 4, 2010!

The G-Bar supporters are not responsible for the DTU Wireless Network, but we try to provide set up guidelines for both networks.

To use the wireless network, you should preferably use eduroam. In case this does not work on your computer, feel free to contact us.

You can also use the network with the SSID dtu. After you have connected to this network, you will have to authenticate before you can access the internet. Open a browser and type any address - you will get re-directed to the login page https://login.wireless.dtu.dk/.

The reason we recommend using eduroam is that it's encrypted, whereas dtu is completely open. So if you use dtu, anyone could easily snoop on most of your internet activity and even hijack your Facebook account! Besides, once you've set up eduroam (which is really not that difficult), you won't need to provide your login credentials each time you connect your laptop.

Troubleshooting

• Before you do anything else, if you're using Windows, please make sure you have the most current drivers for your network interface card. These will not normally be installed by Windows Update, so you need to download them from the manufacturer -- e.g., Dell, Lenovo, Acer etc. More info is available on http://www.wireless.dtu.dk/en.html. Of course non-Windows users also need current network drivers :-)
• If you are connected to the network but are experiencing bad connectivity, e.g. dropouts, please provide us with the location (building, room) and time, as well as your user name. We'll need that to cross reference with our logs.
• If you get an IP address, but can't get to the login page, please make sure that you are not using a fixed DNS server. Change your network settings to allow to set the DNS server via DHCP.
• If you can login, but don't have access to the internet, please make sure that you are not using a fixed DNS server. Change your network settings to allow to set the DNS server via DHCP.
• Google Chrome uses DNS prefetching which may cause that the login page for the "dtu" network does not open. Please disable DNS prefetching under Tools -> Options -> Under the hood, and try again.
• Mac OSX 10.7 (Lion) tends to give panics (at least with eduroam). This can usually be solved by disabling IP v6. To do this, open a terminal and run:

$ networksetup -listallnetworkservices

This should list all your networks and assuming your wireless is called "Wi-Fi", the IP v6 is disabled by using:

$ networksetup -setv6off "Wi-Fi"
